New RVer Essentials Checklist — What You Actually Need
Every experienced RVer has a story about the trip where they didn't have a sewer hose support or a surge protector. This is the honest first-trip shopping list — the gear you'll really use, organized by hookup, leveling, towing, safety, and camp comfort.

Water hookup
- Drinking-water safe fresh water hose (25 ft)The white or blue ones. A garden hose will make your water taste like, well, garden hose.
- Water pressure regulatorCampground pressure can spike past 100 psi and burst your lines. This $10–40 part protects your whole plumbing system.
- Inline or canister water filter
- Water hose Y-splitter and a couple of hose washers
Sewer setup
- Quality sewer hose kit, 15–20 ft, with fittingsSkip the flimsy hose that comes with many new RVs — a kinked or split sewer hose is a very bad day.
- Clear sewer elbow/adapterNot glamorous, but it's the only way to know when your tank rinse is actually done.
- Sewer hose supportKeeps the hose flowing downhill and off the ground — required at many parks.
- Disposable nitrile gloves — a big box
- Holding tank treatment (drop-ins or liquid)
- RV-safe toilet paperRegular TP can clog tanks and sensors. RV-rated dissolves fast.
Electrical hookup
- Surge protector / EMS for your rig's amperage (30A or 50A)The single most important thing on this list. One bad campground pedestal can fry every electronic in your RV.
- Heavy-duty extension cord matched to your service (30A or 50A)
- Dogbone adapters (15→30, 30→50 or 50→30)Sooner or later you'll meet a pedestal that doesn't match your plug.
- Basic multimeter or polarity tester
Leveling & stabilizing
- Leveling blocksYour fridge, your sleep, and your tanks all care about level.
- Wheel chocks (2 pairs)Chock BEFORE you unhitch. Always.
- Stabilizer jack pads
- Small bubble level or use your phone
- Tongue jack wheel dock or pad (Travel Trailer, Toy Hauler, Pop-Up Camper)
- X-chocks or stabilizers between tandem tires to cut the wiggle (Travel Trailer, Fifth Wheel, Toy Hauler)
Towing & loading gear
- Weight-distribution hitch with sway control, properly sized (Travel Trailer, Toy Hauler)Sized to your loaded tongue weight — have it set up professionally the first time.
- Hitch ball and receiver lock (Travel Trailer, Toy Hauler, Pop-Up Camper)
- Kingpin lube plate or quality kingpin grease (Fifth Wheel)
- Trailer brake controller (if your truck doesn't have one built in) (Travel Trailer, Fifth Wheel, Toy Hauler)
- Towing mirrors for your tow vehicle (Travel Trailer, Toy Hauler, Pop-Up Camper)
- Camper tie-down and turnbuckle system (Truck Camper)
- Steps or step ladder for bed entry (Truck Camper)
- Tow bar, base plate, and supplemental braking system (if flat-towing a car) (motorhomes)
- Tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS)A trailer blowout you don't feel can do thousands in damage before you notice.
Safety & tools
- Basic tool kit: screwdrivers, pliers, sockets, adjustable wrench, cordless drill
- Tire pressure gauge that reads to at least 100+ psi
- 12V portable air compressor rated for your tire pressures

- Battery jump pack
- Roadside kit: reflective triangles, flares, safety vest

Camp comfort
